Dear Girls,

Dear Girls, Tomorrow I will return to work after six short weeks of maternity leave at home with both of you. The time I have spent with you while welcoming Eloise into our family has been so precious and while I know our summer together isn’t far away, it’s still so difficult to leave you both. At the same time, I must admit I’m looking forward to having structure and routine restored for both of you as well as for myself! Maybe someday you will know the joys as well as the trials and tribulations […]

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day, a day to celebrate the women who raised us and the women who are currently doing the raising. To me, this is a day that at least should, in theory, celebrate more than just women who have procreated. It’s a day when I can celebrate being a mom but I can also celebrate the strong women who have helped shape my life and the lives of my daughters in some way: my mom, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, and dear friends, some of whom are mothers and some of whom are not. Without these women, […]

Eloise’s Birth Story

My due date for my second pregnancy was Monday, April 22nd, the day after Easter Sunday and the first Monday after April vacation. Clara was born four days early, so I was hopeful that our second baby, who I was sure was a boy, would arrive sometime before the 22nd as well. In fact, I had been coaching the baby to be born on the 12th for several weeks. I joked with everyone who asked that I thought the 12th would be a lovely day- it was the Friday before vacation and therefore would guarantee […]

Comedy

One of the main reasons that I started this project was not only to help me cope with Clara’s Autism diagnosis but also to help others who may be going through similar struggles feel like they’re not alone. A community of like-minded parents is indispensable as a mom and I have found that it doesn’t really matter if this community is composed of close-knit friends or hilarious internet strangers. I’m in a somewhat unique position as the only mom in my close group of friends so I don’t have a ton of mom friends to […]

An Ode to Daddy

I find it somewhat shocking that I have time to sit down and write today as it’s my first official day of maternity leave all on my own! Matthew took two weeks to be home with us after the birth of our sweet Eloise, but he is back to work today… on his birthday no less. Even though this morning was completely hectic getting Clara to her group class and picking her up on time between nursing, pumping, and ordering birth announcements, I feel the need to take advantage of the girls’ nap time to […]

Motherhood, Part Deux

It feels so lovely to sit down and write again after a short respite that included welcoming the newest member of our pack, Miss Eloise! That’s right, The Nugget’s identity is finally known! And although coming up with a name for her took some time due to the fact that I was convinced she was a boy for nine months, we couldn’t be more enamored by the little one who God sent to complete our family. Her birth story was a somewhat amusing and unique one, and while I certainly look forward to sharing it […]

Raising Awareness of Autism and of Lunch

We all wore blue yesterday. Our family’s very first Autism Awareness Day after the diagnosis! We were going to celebrate our amazing Clara by visiting the Easter Bunny and going out to dinner, a Tuesday Night of family fun! It couldn’t be just a coincidence that her amazing Easter outfit is entirely blue, complete with a bunny tutu and a pom pom bunny tail on the shirt. (To Clara, that outfit is what dreams are made of. It. Doesn’t. Get. Any. Better.) Daddy would leave a bit early from work and Mommy would quickly go […]

Exhaustion.

I write about one thing: motherhood. Specifically, I write about being a mom to my beautiful daughter who was recently diagnosed with Autism. Recently is a really keyword in that sentence as it implies how much I don’t yet know and how much I have yet to learn. This is one of those stories.  Matthew was away on business this week. He came home tonight, thankfully, because I’m very much in a state of not-being-able-to-function. Not that him traveling through three different time zones in three days is going to really help tonight, but an […]

Long Days, Short Years

Not long after giving birth to Clara, I remember reading somewhere that in motherhood, the days are long but the years are short. Looking back on her almost twenty-nine months of life, I can honestly say that truer words have never been spoken. I honestly can’t believe that I have an almost two-and-a-half year old and we’re mere weeks away from welcoming her brother or sister into our family. Sometimes, late at night, I flip through pictures of when Clara was an infant. The day she was born seems like it was yesterday but simultaneously […]

Hopes and Dreams… And a Dog

To my sweet girl, happiness could probably be defined by one simple thing: a warm, slobbery kiss from her favorite doggie. These two have been best buds since before she was born. Francesca  joined our family in 2013, three and a half years before she would meet her soul mate. She has been changing our lives and shedding her way onto our couches and into our hearts ever since then. In fact, before Clara was born, Chesie was my baby and my relationship with her was the closest thing I had ever known to motherhood. […]
